Lake Keowee was built by Duke Power between1967 and 1971 for the purpose of generating hydroelectric power.  It has 18,500 acres of water and 300 miles of shoreline and was the first lake developed as part of  Duke Powers Keowee-Toxaway Complex.  This complex includes the Oconee Nuclear Station and the Keowee, Jocassee and Bad Creek hydroelectiic stations.  At full pond, the elevation of Lake Keowee is 800 feetThe cities of Greenville and Seneca both get their water supply from this lake.  This is one of the most beautiful parts of the country, with the crystal clear waters of Lake Keowee and the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains visible from many areas of the lake.  Recreational areas are plentiful with many public access areas in addition to many private subdivisions with docks.  The Duke Energy web site outlines the public Access Areas along with a map of Lake Keowee.

There are numeous subdivisions along the shoreline of LakeKeowee.  These range in size from large gated communities such are Keowee Key which has both waterfront and interior lots  to small so-called designer communities with all lots being waterfront.  The locations of some of these communities are mapped here.
