HartwellLake was built by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a flood control, navigation and hydropower project.In addition to its original purpose, recreation, water quality, water supply, and fish and wildlife management were added later added to its uses.Bordering Georgia and South Carolina on the Savannah, Tugaloo and Seneca rivers, HartwellLake was created by the building of Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River.One of the Southeasts largest public recreation lakes, it has a shoreline of 962 miles and contains nearly 56,000 acres of water.Numerous developments have been built around HartwellLake in both South Carolina and Georgia.The Corps of Engineers controls and retains ownership of the shoreline and issues all dock permits.Click here for more information about Hartwell Dam & Lake including details about shoreline management and dock permits and the history of the lake.
